About Jill
A friendly teacher who makes maths feel possible.
I am Jill Irving, a former Further Education Mathematics lecturer and a one-to-one maths tutor. I have spent years helping learners of all ages and abilities understand maths, pass their exams, and, just as importantly, stop feeling afraid of it.
For much of my career I taught maths in Further Education, working with GCSE students, Functional Skills learners and adults returning to study. I supported people of every age, ability and background, including many who arrived convinced that they were simply "not a maths person". Time and again I watched that belief fall away once the subject was explained clearly, kindly and at the right pace.
That is what I love about tutoring. One-to-one, I can give you my full attention, find the exact points where things stopped making sense, and rebuild from there. There is no class to keep up with and no one to feel embarrassed in front of. Just steady, encouraging support shaped entirely around you.
My students often tell me that I make maths feel less intimidating and far easier to understand. They appreciate the calm, patient approach and the way I adapt my explanations to suit how they learn. Many who started out lacking confidence soon begin to enjoy the subject and feel more capable in lessons, tests and exams. That transformation, from dread to confidence, is the part of the job I care about most.
My approach
Patient, supportive and built around you.
Patience, always
Nothing is ever rushed and no question is too small. If something does not click the first time, we try another way, and another, until it does. Learning maths should feel safe, not stressful.
Personalised to you
Every learner is different, so every lesson is different. I shape the pace, the examples and the explanations around how you learn best, and around the exam or goal you are working towards.
Confidence first
Confidence and ability grow together. As you start to understand more, the fear fades and the enjoyment returns. I keep that front and centre, because a confident learner does far better than an anxious one, in lessons and in exams.
